Unit 63 Task 1
Theory of Sound
Although, Sound is
a vibration in an elastic medium such as air, water, building materials and
earth it’s also a waveform. Sound is also vibrated bodies in the form of waves
of compression and rarefactions in the air. The next in line alongside sound is
wavelength, which is simply defined as the distance of a sound wave traveling
during one cycle of vibration. The speed of sound is around 767 miles per hour,
which is fast however; it’s not as fast as the speed of light. Although, music
can be hard to define at times it is best said as the arrangement of sounds
(compilation). Sound is commonly measured in pressure levels or DB (Decibel). On
the other hand, there are several types of sound formats from WAV, AIFF, MP3,
etc. Some sound formats are larger in byte size than others. However, WAV music
files are compatible with Final Cut Pro, other formats like MP3’s aren’t
familiar with the editing programs.
Wavelength – Wavelength with reference to sound is the distance
between corresponding points of two waves that are consecutive. In other words,
wavelength is measured from crest to crest or from trough to trough.
Amplitude – with relevance to sound amplitude is the extent to which air
particles are displaced and that’s amplitude of sound. It’s easily defined as
the loudness of the sound.
Frequency – in sound, frequency is the measurement of the number of times that a
repeated event occurs per unit of time, in this occasion it’s the amount of
cycles of repetitive waveform per second.
Basics of Sound
Recording
In order to start
sound recording/audio recording you’ll need a microphone, speaker and the
recording device. A microphone is an input device which sends data to the
device (computer) which in this case will be the sound spoken into the recording
program (software). There are two types of microphones and these are:
Transducer and Sensor. Musical artists commonly use microphones in the
production of making songs. However, microphones also known as mikes are used
in television, radio, telephones, hearing aids, etc. Audio channels are also
important when it comes to sound recording, as there are two sound systems,
which are Mono (phonic) and Stereo (phonic), the difference between the two is
that monophonic relates to the reproduction of sound with a single channel. On
the other hand, stereophonic relates to reproduction of sound using two audio
channels.
Analogue/Digital
Sound
Analogue: This refers to recording audio in a format of
continues vibrations that are analogous in other words comparable to the
original sound waves. Before audio recording became digitally advanced, sounds
were created into vinyl records or written to tape.
Digital: This refers to the reproduction and transmission of
sound stored in digital format. This may include CDs as well as all other sound
files, which may be stored on a PC. Common formats are music
Comparison between Analogue & Digital
Analogue and
Digital sound have loads of qualities that make it an advantage or
disadvantage, once analogue sound is recorded the audio is stored, it also
gives a natural sound, it can also be edited with simple slices on the other
hand, there are disadvantages like expensiveness, difficulty to synchronize,
software compatibility problems, etc. Digital sound has better sound for cheaper
equipment, along with potential for very low distortion. However, there are
also disadvantages such as; computers crashing, latency, software compatibility
problems, etc.

South Thames Promotional Video
In this unit we will be creating a
promotional video in order to reach other children, with aims of advertising
the colleges capabilities to attract parents and students. To reach the client
needs we’ll need to create several ideas and put them together to come up with
something unique. However, we need to research about what the school does, for
example; sport activities, excursion programs, etc. This will draw in the
attention of students, as we all know that “all work and no play will make Jack
a dull boy”. We will need to explain everything that the college does, and most
importantly displaying feedback from the students and possibly even teachers
that work at South Thames. As I group I want to make our promotional video as
inspiring and exciting as possible that way we will be able to gain the
attention of new students and more importantly show how unique we are as a
college.
With the filming aspect of this promotional
video project, I had plans of filming interviews with powerful and short
questions which require one word answers and the reason for this is simply that
when we gather up several interviews and have some of the students first
reactions and answers to the questions it will bring out the liveliness of the
college. I also aim to set up a small act of about 60 seconds if not less, of a
student coming on his first day and how welcome the school make him feel, which
eventually eases his anxiousness. My reasons for this is for teenagers to feel
themselves, feel important and feel free as well as secure. I will start from
the student leaving his home on his/her first day in college and it will
contain mostly slow motion effects and a fast heartbeat sound and the reason
for this is to go down to the students level and let them know that we
understand, then they get to the college and people are welcoming them every
moment in time, to make the student feel as if this is their second home.
My target audience is the students who have
finished secondary school and are now moving onto college because we need to
create a video where they are inspired and most importantly they like what they
see, because nowadays visuals are just as important if not more than the what
they hear.

Planning a promotional video for South Thames
I have been able to produce interview questions for the promotional video we're making, these are:
Copyright Issues
Copyright is a type of legal protection which is put on to several kinds of works created by man, such as songs, lyrics, computer software, books, films, TV shows and many more. In order for specific work to be protected by copyright it has to be: Original in other terms not copied, it must have a minimum height of creativity, and there are a few others. If people use copyrighted work without any consent they could face different kinds of consequences however, the main ones are: loss of freedom, loss of property as well as fines and many more.

Planning a promotional video for South Thames
I have been able to produce interview questions for the promotional video we're making, these are:
- If you had one word to explain this college, what would it be?
- What do you think makes this college unique?
- What are your views on the activities of the college?
- What made you chose this college?
- What do you think of the teaching here at South Thames College?
- What would you make you consider recommending this college to others?
