Game Show - Evaluation UNIT 61

Evaluation

  • What went well in terms of technical details and did you have any problems?

In terms of technical details, we had a couple of issues technically because it was done it quite a fast paste. The battery on the camera ran out which delayed us in time, this was a technical issue but, was easily solved as it wasn't much of a problem. The microphone was placed in awkward positions which made the volumes differ from time to time.
  •  What went well creatively and did you have any problems?
Creatively, we were able to set the scene properly as the scenery went according to the plan we originally set out. However, the green screen was over lit which caused a problem whilst editing as it was harder to key out the green screen on the moving images. The presenter was wearing glasses and in this case the light was reflecting the green screen onto his glasses which clashed together when it came to the editing side of the project. The microphone was really far away from the presenter which made it harder for the audience to hear him clearly, the tables in the medium close up shot were not straight which made it look like the scenery wasn't thought of too deeply.
  • Did the group work well together. In what way?
The group worked well together considering what they had to use, other than the technical and creative issues everyone worked efficiently with no arguments which I actually found was great because it's always important to maintain a good relationship with your peers in order to produce good work and that's exactly what took place, remarkable behaviour. When everyone was given the task we all spoke together in and orderly form how we'd come about completing the task, we gave each other roles within the classes and we went forward. Whilst we were working, we managed to all do the work that we were assigned to which sped up the process of finishing the project and this is where group work becomes fun.
  • Were there any problems within group?
Within my group, I didn't discover any problems unless it was a misunderstanding or personal thoughts of one another. I don't usually take interest to group work but, I found that when everyone in your group is on the same mission as you and they want to proceed and succeed as much as you. You will find that it becomes less like work and more like fun.
  • Did you find the project useful to you. What did you learn?
I'm a big fan of the fact that we learn new things everyday and in this situation, I found not only that group work is amazing at times but that, i've learnt how to make better cuts during my editing and how to get better shots in specific scenes, I feel like my mind has opened up that little extra.
  • If you could do it again what would you change?
If I could do the task assigned again, I would be grateful because even since we complete it. I could fully say that i've learnt 101 things that I thought I wouldn't have learnt so quickly. If I could change a few things it would have to be the position of the microphone in order to gain better sound quality, I would also change my the angles in which we filmed the presenter and contestants in because it was too basic and looked like we underthought the shots. I'd like to change the presenter as they weren't able to give enough facial expressions to give the audience enough energy, which is quite a downfall but still minor. I would change the positioning of the tables so that, it looks more organised and the reason for this is that, the tables were quite crooked and this looks unprofessional.
  • How did the videos compare with the original criteria?
The comparison between the completed project and the criteria we originally followed was not at too much of a difference, and the reason that there was still a little difference was because at the ending of the project it happened to be that we all started to get tired so as a group we stopped following the task as much as when we began the task.

Task 1 Unit 61 Interactive Media Design - Game Show

The Game Show

The game show i've chosen to research about is a show based in both the UK and US which has been trending for a good number of years. The show is called "Wheel of Fortune" and it is literally based on a wheel which spins and determines the questions that will be delivered to both opposing teams. It's a British television show created by Merv Griffin. Contestants compete to solve word puzzles to win cash and prizes like holidays and cars. In the graphic design terms of the game show, they have have very distinct colours which make the show so eye catching. What is important is how they have managed to balance out the site so that the colours are equal around the whole website and not just a whole bunch of colours on one corner of the page and dull on the other parts, this also boils down to the composition of the website which they were also unique with. They've symbolised the logo with a colour wheel then made it more stunning and modernised, they also made great use of typography. Typography is literally the style and appearance of text whether it's a still image or moving, in this case it appears that they have formed the text "Wheel Of Fortune" into a circle as it emphasises the fact that it's a wheel. Moving on to the interactive design and how it's structured on the website, i'd say that the game is aimed at adults specifically from about ages of 20-60. The reason I state this is because the questions that are asked during the game shows are questions that are not really aimed or expected for people under the age for 20 to answer. The content that appears in Wheel of Fortune is unique as well as the semiotics, the reasons for this is that they needed to come up with a complete new way of expressing themselves uniquely in comparison to other game shows such as; Deal Or No Deal, CountDown, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and many more. Next, i'd like to speak about the navigational design of the Wheel Of Fortune website. This is a very special design because they've been very interactive with it by adding bright colours which are quite impressive to the human mind. There are a number of drop down menus which make it much easier to navigate through without out any problems. The website gives you the ability to download wallpapers which are based on the Wheel Of Fortune, which is for people who have a passion for the game show itself. On the website, there is plenty of information about them and how they've progressed throughout the years... You are now able to download applications on all of your latest technology such as Apple iPhone, Apple iPad and computers. This makes it easier to play the game whilst you're out and about, you don't have to be physically attached to a computer anymore. The Wheel Of Fortune US version ranks as the longest-running syndicated game show in the States, with over 6,000 episodes aired.

  • How have you promoted each app? was it successful?
I managed to promote each social media application by creating a website based on social media promotion then creating a page for every application which is popular in this moment of time. I also showed media including videos and images which includes me in action of using each application and how you can use them to the best of their ability. I think it was a successful task all together and it went smoothly. I've created a purpose page which explains the main reason the website was made for promoting social media which is based on music videos and short films.

  • How effective is your content?
In my point of view, I think that I was able to cover each social media application with good explanation on the basis of how to use them and how to get the best out of them and most importantly what good they bring to you. I didn't really want to make it based on text, so I made a few galleries in order for my audience to see how everything's done, that way i'm able to be more interactive with my audience, this is very important because people get bored easily if they feel as if they're not able to relate or understand the purpose quick enough. I think this is how i've been effective and different because i've been able to grab the attention of my viewers without having to overdo myself.

  • Who is your target audience? Have you targeted a specific audience with each app?
My target audience for this specific project is based on ages 14-26. However, all ages use social media applications that's why I can't totally specify it to limited ages. There are grandparents and in general elderly people that still engage in social media, as a matter of fact they probably use it more than they used to. Skype is a free calling application which is applicable to all ages once you are familiar with the operations and know how to use it, Facebook is exactly the same. With other applications such as, Twitter and Instagram, They are more for teenagers and adults which I would say are based from ages 15-30. Other applications like YouTube and Snapchat are slightly different and the reasons for this is that for example with YouTube, you are able to view anything that's viral as well as things that didn't go viral, you can listen to your favourite music and that includes the music video along with it, it's entirely free and that means no hidden costs. Therefore, Youtube is one of the most used social media applications ever because even children can use it to play their most favourite music as many times as they like without any question. Overall i'd say that my target audience is aimed at 14-26.

  • How easy and effective is your website to navigate?
This was one of my major tasks to complete and that was to make sure that my website is easily accessible, the main reason for this was simply because in the past I made sites that were hard to navigate and I was told several times about this, ever since then i've found navigation much more important. My audience will need to be able to interact with my website with ease and without having to put much thought into it. Therefore, i've made a drop down menu under 'Social Media', that way once you hover the pointing cursor over the term social media you'll be able to see all the applications that you can gain understanding on. I put the titles to each page at the top where it's clear to see so that when people land on the page it's the first thing they see.

  • What did not go well?
I found that during the course of creating my website and adding the different features that it wouldn't let me save my work at times which set me back greatly. Whilst I was doing my Snapchat page I had videos that I saved from my account however, they wouldn't let me send them through my email. Therefore, I had to use the snapchat videos that I had already sent to my email in the past in order to display Snapchat information and how I used it to advertise and promote my topic. I'm still grateful for being able to overcome that barricade because there were times where I was thinking if i'll be able to choose Snapchat as one of the applications to appear on my website, i'm happy it ended up going smoothly. Other than the videos not saving, I had some major faults during creating a mood-board because I originally wanted to do a page for each application but, I ended up doing it all one page. It's in less detail but, it's much easier to understand my point.
  • What could you improve?
If I had a chance to change anything, it would be the amount of detail that I put into the applications. However, I think the detail I put in is pleasant enough because it's not too much neither is it too less. I take criticism as a compliment, so i'd love to hear what people saw and think of my project that way I can improve my work in order to get the best out of my work.

Unit 56 - Social Media

1.a) Research the following: What are they? How do they work? Refer to examples and explain the benefits.

Communication protocols: worldwide web consortium (W3C); wireless access protocol (WAP); global system for mobile (GSM); 3rd generation protocols (3G); multimedia message service (MMS); general packet radio service (GPRS); Bluetooth; broadband (ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), cable); voiceover internet protocol (VoIP)

1.a) Communication Protocols

i) Worldwide Web Consortium -
This is a term which is also known as (W3C), it is the main standards body for the World wide web which is more commonly accepted as 'WWW.' W3C work with the global community with aims of establishing international standards for server protocols as well as clients which then enable communications to take place on the internet. Basic examples are; Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc.

ii) Wireless Access Protocol -
This is an industry specification that allows messaging and information services to be sent and delivered to wireless devices independent of which wireless technology they use. There are many devices that use WAP and these are; Blackberry Smart Phones, Apple iPhones, etc.

iii) Global System for Mobiles -
This is a digital mobile telephony system that is widely used within European countries and other parts of the world. Another term for it is GSM, it uses a variation of time division multiple accesss which is known as TDMA and is most widely used of the three digital wireless telephony technologies.

iv) 3rd Generation Protocols -
This is most commonly known as 3G, it is based on a set of standards used for mobile devices and mobile telecoms use services and networks that comply with the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 specifications.

v) Multimedia Messaging Service -
This is well known as MMS, it's a standard way to send messages that include multimedia content to and from mobile phones. It extends the core SMS (Short Message Service) capability that allowed exchange of text messages only up to 150 characters.

vi) General Packet Radio Service -
This service is commonly known as GPRS which is easily explained as packet oriented mobile data service on the 2G and 3G cellular communication system's global system for mobile communications. It is also another way of sharing information, you are able to use GPRS without having WI-FI activated.

vii) Bluetooth -
This is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances mainly used between personal devices. Bluetooth is mainly useful for headphones, it also for linking your devices to cars. There are loads of bluetooth devices that are used around the world even cars, headphones, microphones, etc.

viii) Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line -
This is a type of DSL broadband communications technology used as a router, which is more advanced as you are able to use the internet and the telephone at once.

ix) Voice Over IP -
This is a way of communicating from device to device by sending data in form of sound through input devices (Microphone). VOIP is used in loads of ways across multimedia and voice commmunications. With an app called WhatsApp you are able to send voicenotes/recordings to contacts.

 1. b) Research/Case Study

Choose one social media app –
Who invented it? When was it created? For what purpose? How does it work? Include examples of adverts promoting the app. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the app – refer to at least two examples, one positive and one negative. What are the legal and ethical considerations of this app?
Brief Introduction
The social media application that I have chosen for this case study and research is the billion dollar company which goes by the name of Twitter. This is a application which has aims of keeping the world in contact, bloggers find Twitter easy to work with as they are able to tweet (share) what's on their mind to the rest of the world with a simple click.

Twitter
Twitter was established in March 2006, however wasn't actually published/launched till July 2006. The creators were Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass. The service gained worldwide popularity, with more than 70 million users in 2012 which posted around 300 million tweets each day. You are able to access twitter via website interface, SMS (Short Message Service), or mobile device application. The incorporation itself is based in San Francisco and has more than 25 offices around the globe. Twitter works by users sending and reading short messages which go by the name of "tweets" and they are at a maximum of 140-characters long.

This advertisement which was found on YouTube, was used to explain how fast Twitter spreads information from user to user. The Application itself has many advantages and disadvantages that come with it, one of the main advantages are that you are able to access and keep up-to-date with what is going on in todays generation with ease, for this specific reason Twitter has a large popularity, business owners want their company to be more open and exposed to the world so they use their Twitter accounts in order to make this possible by promoting their services and products. This is a common way most business' use in order to share their company to other Twitter users in the world. On the other hand, Twitter also has its disadvantages as everything in life has an advantage and disadvantage. On Twitter, the wrong things can spread across the internet both explicit posts and violation posts, people who use Twitter can find these posts upsetting as they could be racist, sexist or ageist. However, Twitter aim to remove as much posts that users may find offensive as possible in order, to reduce and keep the amount of complaints as low as possible. Lastly, i'd like to speak about the legal and ethical considerations of the application "Twitter". Twitter has several numbers of rules and regulations which you must abide by in order to use Twitter with peace and no penalties, the fact that they have done this makes them a better company because it reduces the amount of offensive posts that can be tweeted.

Evaluation:

  • Fit for purpose?
I personally think that my official banner was able to reach good standards and for that specific reason I think it was also fit for purpose, not only did I aim at promoting the business 'Beats by dre.'
But, I was able to create a simple advertisement which put the major point across with ease.

  • What are its technical qualities?
The technical qualities within the short advertisement that I created for beats are that it was able to put the point across by the simple catch phrase "Make your music fit your lifestyle". This is very enticing and it makes you feel as if these are headphones you should own, depending on your lifestyle and especially depending whether you are a fan of music or not.

  • What are its aesthetic qualities?
The aesthetic qualities that can found in the advertisement are the smooth and unexpected transitions that were created in order to raise awareness to the audience, and the crowd in which the ad is aimed at which could be at any ages as music has no age limit or requirement.

  • How were your production skills (ideas generation, game design documentation, workflow and time management, technical competence, teamwork)?
In the specific case, of production skills, the advertisement was created by myself and when I start a project depending on the size of the project whether it is large or small. I create a mindset where I'm able to know if it will be finished that day or stretched across a period of time. I kept working on it constantly for 2 hours straight, literally selecting different individual ideas which were coming to my head at that moment in time.
